Who we are

chapterpass is a web-based audiobook mastering tool. The data controller is identified in the Legal Notice above. For privacy enquiries, email us at info@chapterpass.com.

What data we collect and why

Where we rely on legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR), we have conducted a balancing assessment and consider the processing necessary and proportionate. You may request a summary by email.

The source survey is optional, and it is stored with the same temporary session identifier described below: no email, no name, and no IP address. Please do not put personal details in the free-text box. We review those answers in aggregate only and never use them to contact anyone.

Results email

On the results screen you can ask us to email you a summary of your batch. You get that summary at once, and, if you have not mastered the batch, up to four more emails over the following ten days: what the check that failed most often means for your submission, what to look at before you upload, and a discount code. The follow-ups stop the moment you buy or unsubscribe.

We store your email address, the consent wording you agreed to, where on the site you asked, the time, and a two-letter country code from Cloudflare. The emails are sent by Resend, our email provider, which receives your address and the summary: how many files you mastered, how many passed, the names of the checks that failed, the total length of audio, the price quoted and whether the batch was paid. Never a file name and never any audio. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time without affecting earlier processing.

To unsubscribe, use the unsubscribe link at the foot of any email we send you, which opens chapterpass.com/unsubscribe, or email info@chapterpass.com. We keep your address until you unsubscribe. After that we keep it marked as unsubscribed, with the record of what you agreed to, so that it is never emailed again and we can show that you had agreed (our legitimate interest, Art. 6(1)(f)), unless you ask us to erase it. Resend keeps your address on its suppression list for the same reason, so no automated email can reach it. Asking for your results by email on a later visit is new consent and starts again. The list is stored with Cloudflare, our hosting provider. We never sell it or share it with anyone for their own use, and your email address never enters our analytics.

Post-purchase emails

Above the Pay button there is a box: “Email me a short guide to submitting these files to ACX, plus occasional tips.” It is unticked unless you tick it. Stripe collects your email address for the payment and the receipt; it passes that address to us only when the box is ticked. Leave it unticked and we never see the address and send nothing.

If you tick it, we store the same record as for the results email: your email address, the consent wording you agreed to, that it came from checkout, the time, and the two-letter country code from your billing address. Resend, our email provider, receives your address, the number of files and the length of audio in your order, the amount you paid, and two discount codes made for you. Never a file name and never any audio. You get three emails over about 75 days: a guide to submitting your files to ACX, a check-in a month later with a code you can pass to a friend, and a code for your next books. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time without affecting earlier processing.

Retention after unsubscribing is as described for the results email above. If you had earlier asked for your results by email, we also use the address from your checkout to end those follow-ups, since you no longer need them; that uses nothing beyond the fact that the order was paid.

Desktop link email

Mastering needs a computer, so on a phone or tablet you can ask us to email you the chapterpass link. We pass your email address to Resend, our email provider, to send that one email, then forget it: we do not store it, add it to any list, or put it in our analytics. To stop the form being used to flood an inbox, we keep a one-way hash of the address for 24 hours, which cannot be turned back into the address. The legal basis is taking the step you asked for (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). Resend keeps its own delivery records under its privacy policy.

What we do not collect

Your audio content never leaves your browser. File names and duration are transmitted to generate your checkout; the audio itself is not uploaded. We do not create user accounts and we do not store passwords. Our analytics hold no direct identifiers: no email, no name, no phone number, and no IP address (not even a hashed or shortened one). Your email lives with Stripe, for payments, and with us and Resend only if you ask for your results by email, tick the box at checkout, or, from a phone, ask for the link to the site. We do not build persistent profiles tied to your identity and we use no fingerprinting. We set one advertising cookie, and only for people in the United States who arrive from a chapterpass advertisement in ChatGPT; it is described under Cookies and similar technologies below. Apart from reporting that such an advertisement click ended in a purchase, we do not track you across other websites.

How our analytics work

We measure how the service is used so we can improve it. This is first-party, privacy-preserving analytics. Here is exactly what that means.

• We record which pages are viewed, how far they are read, the steps of the upload and checkout flow, anonymous outcomes such as whether a file passed or failed and the measured ACX figures (loudness, peak, noise floor, silence, format), and coarse error types when something breaks.
• The measured ACX figures are numbers your browser already computed. No audio, no filename, and no waveform ever leaves your device.
• We see only coarse context: a two-letter country code (from Cloudflare) and a broad device class (mobile, tablet, or desktop). No city, no precise location, no fingerprinting.
• To stitch a single visit together we use a temporary session identifier held in your browser's sessionStorage (key cp_sid). It is a random value, it is not a cookie, and it is regenerated each time you start a new browser session. It does not follow you between visits and is not tied to your identity.
• Events are stored in Cloudflare Analytics Engine. The small number of conversion events (such as checkout and download) are also kept in our own database for longer-term reporting. We additionally send the same events to Google Analytics 4 as a cross-check. Google Analytics is configured to run without cookies or any other storage on your device.

We rely on legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) for this analytics, because it uses no direct identifiers, builds no cross-session or cross-site profile, and is limited to understanding and improving our own service. Advertisement measurement is a separate matter and is described under Cookies and similar technologies below. You can object to this analytics at any time by emailing info@chapterpass.com.

Third parties who receive data

Stripe, Cloudflare, Google Analytics, Web3Forms, and Resend act as our processors: they handle data on our instructions and for our purposes only. OpenAI is not a processor. It receives the advertisement conversion data described below and acts as an independent controller of it, under its own terms.

Cookies and similar technologies

Our analytics set no cookies. The session identifier described above lives in your browser's sessionStorage, not in a cookie, and it clears when your browser session ends. Google Analytics is configured to run without cookies or any other storage on your device.

After you ask for your results by email, your browser keeps a flag named cp_results_emailed in the same sessionStorage, so the form does not ask again during that browser session. It holds no address, it is not a cookie, and it clears when the session ends.

If you arrive through a link that carries a promotion code (for example from a narration coach or a friend), your browser keeps that code under cp_ref in localStorage for 30 days, so the discount still applies if you master your files on a later visit. It holds only the code, nothing about you, and you can clear it in your browser at any time.

We set one advertising cookie, and only in the United States. If you arrive from a chapterpass advertisement in ChatGPT, the link carries an opaque click identifier (oppref). Where Cloudflare reports that the visit comes from the United States, our server stores that value in a first-party cookie named cp_oppref for 30 days. The cookie holds the click identifier and nothing else: no name, no email, no browsing history. Nothing is stored for anyone who arrives any other way.

If you then buy, our payment webhook sends one server-to-server message to OpenAI containing that click identifier, the Stripe checkout reference, the time, and the order amount and currency. It tells us whether the advertisement led to a sale. No email, no name, no IP address, and no account identifier is sent, and nothing at all is sent when there is no click identifier.

This cookie is not strictly necessary, so under the ePrivacy rules that apply in the EU and the UK it would require your consent. We do not ask for that consent and we do not need to, because the cookie is never set outside the United States. We advertise in the United States only, and our server checks the country Cloudflare reports for the visit before storing anything. Visitors in the EU, the UK, and everywhere else never receive the cookie, and nothing about their visit reaches OpenAI. In the United States you can block or delete the cookie in your browser settings at any time, or email us to object. Without the cookie, nothing is sent to OpenAI.

Your processed files stay on your own device. We hold them in your browser's IndexedDB storage (database chapterpass) so your results survive a refresh, and they are cleared when you download them or after 24 hours, whichever comes first. This storage is strictly necessary to deliver the service you asked for, and it never leaves your device.

Stripe may set cookies that are strictly necessary for payment processing and fraud detection. Cloudflare may set a security cookie (__cf_bm) for bot management. These are strictly necessary technologies that do not require consent under the ePrivacy Directive.

Your rights

Under GDPR, you have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Rectify inaccurate data
• Request erasure of your data
• Request restriction of processing
• Data portability
• Object to processing based on legitimate interest
• Withdraw consent at any time where we rely on it, such as the results email

To exercise any of these rights, email us at info@chapterpass.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Italian Data Protection Authority (Garante per la protezione dei dati personali). UK residents may also lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office.

International transfers

Personal data may be transferred to the United States through our processors (Stripe, Cloudflare, Google Analytics, Web3Forms, and Resend). Transfers are protected by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and by Standard Contractual Clauses where applicable, which together provide an adequate level of data protection as recognised by the European Commission. Our analytics are designed to carry no direct identifiers, so the analytics data transferred is limited to the coarse, non-identifying events described above.

The advertisement conversion data described above is sent to OpenAI. Because the cookie is set in the United States only, no data about an EEA or UK visitor is sent at all. Where the terms would apply, the OpenAI Ad Tools Data Processing Addendum makes each party an independent controller, has EEA and Swiss data received by OpenAI Ireland Limited, and covers UK data by the UK standard contractual clauses for controller-to-controller transfers. The message itself carries a click identifier and an order value, and no direct identifiers.

California residents

chapterpass does not sell personal information, as that term is defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA). We exchange no personal information for money or for anything else of value. The one disclosure that could fall within the CPRA definition of sharing is the advertisement conversion message described above, which tells OpenAI that an advertisement click ended in a purchase. It carries no name, email, or IP address. To stop it, delete or block the cp_oppref cookie, or email us. If you are a California resident, you have the right to:

• Know what personal information we collect and how we use it
• Request deletion of your personal information
• Request correction of inaccurate personal information
• Limit the use of sensitive personal information
• Not be discriminated against for exercising these rights

Data breach notification

Where a breach of personal data occurs, we will notify the Garante per la Protezione dei Dati Personali within 72 hours in line with Art. 33 GDPR, and will notify affected users without undue delay where the breach poses a high risk to their rights.

Changes to this policy

We may update this page if our data practices change. The Last updated date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.

The service

chapterpass analyses and masters audiobook chapter files to meet ACX and Audible technical specifications. Your audio content never leaves your browser. File names and duration are transmitted to generate your checkout; the audio itself is not uploaded. The quality of the output depends on the quality of your input files.

Pricing and payment

Your first file is free, no payment required. Additional files are priced on the total audio length of the order, billed by the second with each file rounded up to the next whole second: $36 per finished hour ($0.01 per second) for orders under 5 hours, $27 per finished hour for orders of 5 hours or more, and $18 per finished hour for orders of 10 hours or more. The rate applies to the whole order. An order below a threshold is never charged more than the price of the threshold itself, so an order under 5 hours costs at most $135 and an order under 10 hours costs at most $180. Each order is limited to 15 hours of audio and 100 files; a longer book can be split into two orders. Prices are listed in US dollars. As a sole trader operating under the Italian regime forfettario, VAT is not charged on these services. You will see the exact total before confirming payment. Payments are processed securely by Stripe.

Liability

chapterpass masters files to the published technical specifications of each target platform. Our liability is capped at the amount paid for the specific processing session in question. Beyond that:

• We do not guarantee acceptance by ACX, Audible, or any other platform.
• Platform requirements may change without notice.
• We are not liable for issues caused by the quality of your input files.

Force majeure

We are not liable for delays or failures in performance caused by events beyond our reasonable control, including but not limited to infrastructure outages, third-party provider failures, regulatory action, and other extraordinary events.

Acceptable use

You agree not to use chapterpass for unlawful content, to process material that infringes the rights of others, to circumvent technical limits of the service, or to run automated scraping or similar activity. We reserve the right to terminate access where use breaches these terms.

Intellectual property

Your audio files remain your property at all times. We never access, store, or retain your audio content. You grant us a non-exclusive, limited licence to process file names and durations solely to deliver the checkout and processing described in this agreement. The chapterpass software, brand, and website content are our intellectual property.

Service availability

We aim for high availability but do not guarantee uninterrupted service. We may update or modify the service at any time. Significant changes will be communicated on this website.

Governing law

These terms are governed by Italian law. If you are an EU consumer, you retain the protections of your home country's mandatory consumer protection rules, regardless of the governing law chosen.

Dispute resolution

We are not compulsorily bound to any alternative dispute resolution (ADR) body under Codice del Consumo Art. 141, but we will consider ADR in good faith where raised by a consumer. You may also make use of the European Commission's Online Dispute Resolution platform.

Changes to these terms

As chapterpass does not operate accounts, changes are communicated through this page. For paying customers, material changes affecting an active order will be notified by email. The Last updated date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of chapterpass after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
